![]() I was thrilled to see the first one, then realized they were as ubiquitous as a Starbucks on every street corner today.Īt the end of the museum exhibit, there are plaster casts of bodies, including a chained-up dog whose owner did not return in time, a couple embracing in their final moments, a child. Back in the day, the holes held bowls of food for purchase by busy labourers and artisans. One of the delightful surprises was the fast food outlets: a stone counter facing the street with circular holes cut out. I couldn’t miss seeing the practical Cane Cavum (‘Beware of Dog’) mosaic still warning visitors at the House of the Tragic Poet. The houses of the rich revolved around beautiful gardens and the vermillion and ochre of their wall paintings was still intact, along with decorative statues and mosaics. ![]() ![]() Further entertainment options were available at the Amphitheatre (where Pink Floyd performed in 1972), or, if you didn’t like what was on there, the Big Theatre or the Little Theatre. Those were besides the 114-foot recreational swimming pool. Humans kept clean in the famous bath houses, which reminded me of a modern Turkish bath. The sidewalks were raised extra high and crossed with stepping stones to allow for daily flooding to keep the dust down and the streets clean. The ancient city offered many practicalities and comforts. It was impossible to see everything, so we focussed our efforts down certain stick-straight Roman streets an easy task with the excellent free map and guide that came with our entrance ticket. The entire city was much larger than I had imagined, from the wide spaces of the marketplace to the temple square. Someone is monitoring this, right? There’s someone on this? The ambience was definitely aided by a small volcano puffing away unnecessarily, getting darker and darker. In my mind, it took no effort to reconstruct the roofs, reanimate the human and animal residents, and replace all the pots, egg cups, baskets, jewellery, and other detritus of ancient life back in its rightful places. Our post-lunch, late-afternoon visit to the scavi had the advantage of being crowd-free, which made it easier to hear the echoes and see the outlines of the 20,000 people who lived there nearly 2,000 years ago. The twin peaks used to be one before it blew its top, an event which also increased the distance between Pompeii and the sea from 500 metres to two kilometres. As I travelled around the curve to Pompeii, Vesuvius was behind me when I expected it would be in front, and seemed to move out front when I thought I’d passed it. The Gulf of Naples is dominated by the hulking presence of Vesuvius, which has the bemusing quality of never quite being where it ought to be. Thankfully, I was out voted and did not miss this unmissable site in Campania. After having seen the comprehensive exhibit from Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli in Canada, I thought there was little to add to my understanding of the volcanic eruption on August 24th, 79 CE. I was not convinced that a visit to the ruins of Pompeii needed to be on the itinerary. ![]() Chained dog mosaic at the house of Paquius Proculus ![]() ![]() ![]() 16736 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. ![]() 16736, time stamp: 0x5258c500Įrror: ( 09:08:27 AM) (Source: Application Hang) (User: )Įrror: ( 09:56:12 AM) (Source: Application Hang) (User: )Įrror: ( 07:32:24 PM) (Source: Application Hang) (User: )ĭescription: The program IEXPLORE.EXE version. 18247, time stamp: 0x521ea8e7įaulting application start time: 0xIEXPLORE.EXE0Įrror: ( 06:32:56 AM) (Source: Application Error) (User: )įaulting module name: ieproxy.dll, version. 16736, time stamp: 0x5258c4ccįaulting module name: ntdll.dll, version. Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (X64) MiniToolBox by Farbar Version: 13-07-2013 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The fact that the promotion is only running for a week indicates that LEGO probably didn’t make a huge quantity of them, and while it’s boilerplate legalese, they can end the promo early if they run out. For those who do want it, though, you’re better off not waiting. It will only be available for a week, so if you’d rather get a free small brick-built set with your $100 worth of LEGO, you probably won’t have to wait long. But it’s also a free item that’s designed and packaged well. The keychain won’t be for everyone not everyone needs one, and not everyone wants one this heavy. This is the sort of promotional item that ought to have been included in the Star Wars Black Card VIP fiasco for early purchasers of the UCS Millennium Falcon (rather than the cardholder). A keychain is a useful tchotchke, and one that’s both classy and durable while still being appropriately nerdy is just what we needed. While great brick-built traditional LEGO sets are always sure to be a crowd-pleaser as gift-with-purchases (take, for instance, the recent 40407 Death Star II Battle set) it’s exciting to get something different from time to time, especially something that appeals to adults. The figure is a little smaller than minifigure scale, because a proper minifigure-scale version would definitely have been too large and heavy to hang off your ignition or sit comfortably in your pocket. It’s stamped with the LEGO VIP logo and the copyright info, as well as 07/20, which seems to be the date of manufacture. Unlike the regular plastic version which has a hollow back for hiding the regular Han Solo minifigure, the back of the metal block is solid. In fact, if there’s one gripe I might have with it, it’s that it might be too heavy for some people to attach to their keys and lug around all day, unless they like a lot of extra weight in their pocket. But it is quite clear it’s a solid block. I’m no metallurgist so I can’t tell you what alloy of steel it is, except that I’m reasonably sure it’s not actually carbonite. The first thing I noticed when picking up the keychain is how heavy it is. The front side, of course, depicts Han Solo in high relief frozen in carbonite from The Empire Strikes Back. Even the somewhat exclusive, randomly distributed, chrome-red VIP Minifigure keychain from a few years ago got the cardboard tag treatment. It’s a more premium feeling package design than most gift-with-purchase sets, and definitely a cut above the usual keychain packaging, which typically consists of just a cardboard tag. Lifting the lid off the box reveals the keychain laid into a custom-cut piece of foam, beneath a piece of tissue paper. ![]() ![]() ![]()
